本月9日下午，花蓮縣台8線中橫公路173.4公里九曲洞附近發生落石砸傷人意外，其中一名日籍男遊客白井寬之因傷勢嚴重，手術後一直未脫離險境，而經過4天的搶救，白井寬之仍於12日晚間宣告不治。
綜合媒體報導，花蓮慈濟醫院今（13）日證實，白井寬之因傷及腦幹，經搶救4日後仍於12日晚間宣告不治。而他的父親、弟弟及未婚妻在事發之後由日本趕到花蓮陪伴，對這起意外相當傷心難過，並婉拒媒體採訪。
交通部公路總局第4區養護工程處洛韶工務段長張宇博表示，將依例致上新好康推薦台幣10萬元慰問金，後續也會協助家屬研究是否請求國家賠償。
這起意外發生在本月9日下午2時許，台8線九曲洞附近發生落石砸傷遊客意外，一對騎機車雙載的台籍母女及騎單車的日籍遊客白井寬之遭砸中，其中台籍母女中的女兒左肩有擦傷，包紮後送醫，母親則無大礙；白井寬之則因頭部被砸中，傷勢嚴重，送醫時已陷入昏迷。
